Nobody is free from snoring, not even kids, that’s why we as parents must stay vigilant of how our kids sleep and take proper actions if we notice snoring problems in children.

Although in the majority of cases snoring is not dangerous, there is a 2% of children that have a condition called obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Not only that, but snoring can lead to further issues such as bed wetting and deficit of attention, since the kids are not sleeping enough.

Children Snoring Causes

The most common cause of children snoring is enlarged tonsils and adenoids.  They will have to undergo a surgical procedure to solve this problem and avoid restriction of the airway.

Children snoring can be caused by a problem with the muscles and the nerves on the jaw and the throat during sleep. You see, if they don’t work together well the air passage will not be open enough to allow a 100% free flow of the air.

A second cause of snoring is a small jaw or airway since birth.  Having a small jaw or airway will help restricting the free flow of air in the throat.

Determining a Case of Children Obstructive Sleep Apnea

We must learn how to differentiate between common snoring and snoring problems in children related to obstructive sleep apnea.  Common snoring will not result in disrupted sleeping patterns and energy problems.  In contrast, a child with OSAS will have problems staying focused at school, show problems with weight gain or loss and suffer from higher blood pressure.

It is also important to hear our children during the night and notice any sign of lack of air during sleep, such as gasping or pauses.

Pediatric studies are also used, but centers dedicated to children sleep studies are not abundant.

Obesity is one of the factors that can lead to problem of sleep apnea, so be sure to keep your children at a healthy weight level.  As more fat is stored in the body, there is less space in the airway for the air to flow freely.
